Daphne Mason (1928 - 2020)

Mason was typical of woman artists of her era - as a young female artist she did not have a studio and had to work from her kitchen, alongside raising a family. Indefatigable in her energy, after the death of her husband Mason returned to New Zealand from London at the age of 75 years and continued to paint for several hours a day until her death. Mason was invited to show in Kiwi Consciousness: Contemporary Artists from New Zealand, part of the Imago Mundi Luciano Benetton World Art Collection, in Italy in 2016. As a practising contemporary artist Mason had a keen sense of observation and insight that animated her work.

Dilana collaborated with Daphne and transferred “Nebulon-9- from 2012 collection” to hand tufted rug.

Daphne was delighted to see the first photos of this finished rug on her 92nd Birthday (June 4th, 2020). Sadly she died just eight days later, and so was not able to sign this work herself.
